Gamification in Architectural Design

The aim of the workshop is to understand and learn spatial computing strategies using virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and extended reality (XR), which can be integrated at every stage of the Architectural design process.

The course

Interaction and Gamification are the new variables propelling each stage of the Architectural design process from conceptual design to the execution, due to the extended reality mediations. Wearable technologies of the present day are capable of spatializing and projecting the Architectural design and BIM Data into the real space, while not only limiting to visualization of Digital buildings, but by enabling us to intuitively build component – by component of an architectural structure using these mediations. Cloud based Augmented reality, Geo location-based AR, lets you access the urban fabric and augment the facades, streetscapes and enhance the immersive engagement with tons of information in space. These applications enable dynamic and real time modifications of form and space, transforming a surface paradigm to an immersive and experiential paradigm.

The utilization of Gamification in Architecture empowers the contemporary design process to develop intuitive frameworks of collaborating and developing Architecture. Data analytics and performance-based evaluation are the discreet components of these technologies, that allow architects to assess the occupational performance, comfort levels and other experiential factors, contributing to better designed futures. This interactivity in a virtual playfield facilitating design and drawing tools lets Architects expand their borders utilizing game principles and reinvent their design strategies.

The program

The workshop will be in 2 parts, dealing with a Theoretical Presentation followed by a critical discussion and then the students shall have a hands-on session in developing their own Web-based Virtual and Augmented reality design project.

Theoretical Component

Introduction to this new Architectural pipeline towards Architectural design to visualization and construction.

Practical Component

• Design Conception of a Pavilion, Preparation, and Optimization [Utilizing simple Conceptual Architectural Design Strategies - in Rhino or any equivalent 3D modeling software]

• Introduction to WebGL Platforms - Web-based AR & VR development

• Working in groups and preparation of Virtual and Augmented Reality enabled Application [Using Amazon Sumerian Web Editor/ARKI Augmented Reality Platform or an equivalent platform]

• Development and packaging of Web-based AR/VR application

• Deployment and Presentation in AR/VR


Vamsi Vemuri Krishna

Vamsi Krishna Vemuri is a Speculative architect, designer and educator based in Germany and India. Vamsi had completed his Post graduate studies and is an alumnus from the Staedelschule Architecture Class, Frankfurt, Germany. He is a public speaker, actively engaged on different platforms such as TEDx, Annual NASA Convention (India) and various other architecture and design conventions across Europe and India. He is an Associate, Organizer, and tutor with Design Morphine conducting educational events, workshops in Europe and Asia. In 2018, he founded Flux Real Design Collective, an Interdisciplinary practice engaging in the domains of Architecture, gaming, cinematics and advanced fabrication. He is active as a visiting faculty with various Architecture schools in India, conducting lectures and events.

Vamsi`s areas of Interest lie in the eccentric utilization of Computation & real-time visualization, in a post-digital framework. His work revolves around constructing interactive fictions and spatial mediations, engaging different mediums such as Virtual, Augmented and Mixed reality paradigms. He holds a diverse experience in communicating contemporary forms and spatial experiences by engaging film-making and video game development. As a designer and Researcher, his work has been exhibited at various festivals and conventions in the United States, Germany, UK, India, Latvia, Armenia and Japan. In 2017, his Project was awarded the best in Emergent technologies, by the American Institute of Architects. He is engaged with diverse Architecture practices as a Technology and Strategic consultant, enabling them with advanced design processes and methodologies. As a Professional and academic, he had also participated in and won many Architecture & Design competitions and commissions in the AEC Community.

All international participants must check visa eligibility rules as per their local embassies and request for necessary documents.
Organizers will provide invite letter, registration documents and will assist in securing accommodation to all visiting students.
Travel and Accommodation costs are to be borne by each participant themselves, if required.
Teaching language is English.
According to the results each participant will receive a final diploma of training.
Basic 3D modeling skills in any software are preferred (previous knowledge of Rhino3D is not obligatory).
Participants should bring their own laptop with pre-installed software.
